PROJECT CONTENT:
Transport, building, factory, and energy networks are complex, dynamic systems that span physical, digital, and human spheres and are therefore called Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Such critical infrastructures cause about 70% of Austria’s greenhouse gas emissions. As CPSs become increasingly complex and dynamic, their transparency diminishes, making safe and economically efficient operation more difficult and reducing user-friendliness.
The SENSE project focuses on creating explainable Cyber-Physical Systems (ExpCPS) where system events can be explained to various stakeholders. The project hypothesis is that explanations of CPS events could improve their transparency, contributing to increased efficiency and user-friendliness and impacting environmental sustainability. SENSE will advance ExpCPS research in three areas:
1.Scientific Level: SENSE will investigate cutting-edge ExpCPS technologies to strengthen Austria’s sovereignty in managing CPS underlying its key infrastructures:
- Extension of standard Digital Twin architectures;
- Novel methods for semantics-based explainability;
- Personalized and interactive user interfaces.
- Use Cases: SENSE will be guided by three use cases in the Smart Grid (Local Energy Communities, Grid-supportive E-Mobility Charging in Garages) and Smart Building (Energy-efficient Usage) domains. Technological advances will be applied through several in vitro (simulation-based) and in vivo (living lab-based) Proof-of-Concepts (PoCs) with high domain-specific novelty and exploitation potential.
- User Studies: The developed PoCs will form the basis for user studies that will provide data for assessing the impact of ExpCPS on sustainability and economic efficiency through newly developed economic evaluation models.
